New science, same old science teaching

0

Quanta is a new FREE online magazine whose mission is to enhance public understanding of research developments in mathematics and the physical and life sciences. This post is a response to Thomas Lin’s Abstractions blog post ‘Science Evolves. Will Science Education?’

My Thoughts:

I think that a shift in science education can only truly happen if the teacher preparation programs found in higher education make a shift. Think of your typical college experience – lectures, powerpoints, ‘cookbook’ labs – sound familiar? Teacher preparation programs are no different. It is no surprise then, that we then churn out fresh new graduates who revert to what they ‘know’ when the challenges and craziness of first year teaching slaps you in the face. Professors must model the practices of effective teaching, such as inquiry, engagement strategies, behavior management, etc. Only then will teacher candidates know what good teaching looks like, to then do the same their future classrooms. Students of all ages learn best by seeing and doing. Thus, professors of science education must be the change they wish to see in the teaching workforce, and the world 🙂
